יאיר ליאור

Geffen, what is the origin of the name, and what does it mean?

Geffen is a Moshav associated with the Mateh Yehuda Regional Council.

Wine is an important drink and our late sages ordered to make a blessing before drinking it:

ברוך אתה ה' אלוקינו מלך העולם, בורא פרי ה-גפן".

"Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the world, Creator of the Vine."

Drinking wine made from grapes grown on a vine is interwoven with many events in a person's life, Kiddush on Shabbat and holidays, circumcisions, weddings, Purim, and the four glasses of wine drunk on Seder night.

About 67 years ago, immigrants from North Africa who longed to feel the soil of the Land of Israel planted vineyards and trees whose roots would deepen and produce fruit. From these grapes, wine would be made which would make them happy, as the saying goes:

: וְיַיִן יְשַׂמַּח לְבַב אֱנוֹשׁ

"And wine shall rejoice in the heart of man."

(Psalms Chapter 4 verse 10)

"Geffen" is mentioned in Jewish texts more than 13,000 times.

The first settlers chose to call Moshav 'Geffen' in honor of all the grape vineyards planted in abundance among the mountains, as Naim Zmirot Yisrael, King David described it :

אֱלֹקים צְבָאוֹת שׁוּב נָא הַבֵּט מִשָּׁמַיִם וּרְאֵה וּפְקֹד גֶּפֶן זֹאת

God of hosts, look again from heaven and see and command this vine.

(Psalms Chapter 80 verse 15)

We are confident that the vines that the rain and dew saturated with will yield delicate clusters that the wine produced from them will delight many drinkers.

Today, various fruit trees are planted in the moshav.
